Susan Lockwood, Specialist in (MSK) musculoskeletal therapy.

Physiotherapy is not to be confused with massage, physical therapy or chiropractice.

Physiotherapy is a treatment of its own speciality, in which the practitioner has to have gained a qualification to university degree standard, and be registered with the health care practitioners council (HCPC) and the charted society of physiotherapy (CSP).

MSK physiotherapy specialises in the effective treatment of chronic, acute injuries, illness and disabilities of all ages. Physiotherapy is the treatment of pain, soft tissue, bones and joints including ligaments, tendons and mobility problems.

As a physiotherapist I use manual techniques in the treatment of the core skeletal frame, joint dysfunction and muscle spasms. I can help to reduce and eliminate pain and mobility problems, restoring the patient to their optimum physical ability.

Treatable conditions include:

  • Headaches and virtigo
  • Neck pain, stiffness and movement restriction
  • Whiplash
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Scapular stiffness, movement restriction and pain
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Upper and lower back pain

** Sciatica**

  • Numbness, pins and needles in upper and lower limbs and extremities
  • Hip pain (bursitis)
  • Knee pain (patella dysfunction)
  • Feet and ankle problems (plantafaciatus)

As a physiotherapist I also help to reduce pain and manage symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons.

The first assessment and treatment will take up to an hour with further treatments around half an hour. I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing such as a track suit, shorts or leggings to the treatment sessions.

General Medicine

The branch of medicine that refers to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. A general medicine doctor may work with a patient's heart, lungs and brain among other organs. These doctors treat illnesses of the internal organs with methods other than surgery.

Chiropodists specialise in assessing, diagnosing and treating abnormalities and disease of the lower limb. Chiropodists are trained to relieve, prevent and correct these disorders and provide advice on correct foot care to patients.

Chiropody includes treatment of corns, calluses, verrucae, ingrowing toenails, fungal / bacterial infections and long term management of chronic disorders.

Chiropodists also deliver foot health care education to vulnerable groups i.e. elderly and special needs while working closely with medical practitioners i.e. orthopaedic specialists and GPs.

Always ensure your chiropodist is registered with the health professions council.

Orthotics is a specialty within the medical field concerned with the design, manufacture and application of orthoses. An orthosis is an orthopaedic device that supports or corrects the function of a limb or the torso. Corrective shoe inserts are popularly known as orthotics. An orthosis is intended to mechanically compensate for a pathological condition.
